The PicoSure laser breaks down the ink particles into fragments, which the immune system gradually removes.

How Does PicoSure Laser Remove Tattoos?

The PicoSure laser functions by emitting energy in picosecond pulses (one trillionth of a second), which is crucial for effective tattoo removal. This is achieved through several mechanisms, such as:

  • Selective photothermolysis: tattoo ink particles absorb the laser energy selectively, heating rapidly while sparing the surrounding skin from damage.
  • Photoacoustic effect: quick heating of ink particles generates intense pressure waves that break these particles into smaller fragments.
  • Photothermal effect: heat produced by the laser also contributes to the breakdown of ink particles.

By delivering energy in pulses shorter than the thermal relaxation time (TRT) of the ink particles, PicoSure can shatter them without causing substantial harm to adjacent tissues. The immune system then gradually removes these fragmented ink particles over multiple treatment sessions.

How Many Sessions Are Required For Laser Tattoo Removal?

The number of sessions required for effective tattoo removal with PicoSure varies based on individual factors such as skin type, tattoo colour, ink density, scarring, and tattoo location. Here’s a detailed breakdown:

Skin Colour (Fitzpatrick Scale)

HOW IT AFFECTS TATTOO REMOVAL

  • Lighter skin (I-III): responds better and has faster healing.
  • Darker skin (IV-VI): risk of pigmentation changes; more sessions may be required.
Tattoo Colour

HOW IT AFFECTS TATTOO REMOVAL

  • Black/blue ink: easier to remove, requires fewer sessions.
  • Red ink: harder to remove, requires more sessions
  • Green/pink/yellow/white ink: not possible to remove
Amount of Ink Used

HOW IT AFFECTS TATTOO REMOVAL

  • Dense ink: heavier saturation/multiple layers need more treatments.

  • Older tattoos: easier to treat due to natural fading.

Presence of Scarring

HOW IT AFFECTS TATTOO REMOVAL

  • Scarring increases the number of laser treatments required to take effect (scar tissue blocks laser energy)
Tattoo location

HOW IT AFFECTS TATTOO REMOVAL

  • Central location (Face/Neck/Chest/Abdomen): faster ink clearance.
  • Peripheral location (arms/legs/hands/feet): slower ink clearance, more sessions required
Depth of tattoo

HOW IT AFFECTS TATTOO REMOVAL

  • Professional tattoos use more ink at deeper depths, requiring more laser sessions for removal
  • Amateur tattoos use less ink at more superficial levels, requiring less laser sessions for removal

Why $88 PicoLaser Treatments Don’t Work

Many mass market chain clinics are advertising cheap picolaser trials (probably done in a factory line style by less experienced doctors!) in the hope of “upselling” packages. We have seen our fair share of patients who come to us for a second opinion after a less-than-satisfactory experience at such establishments.

At Bay Aesthetic Clinic, we don’t take the “factory line” approach and instead focus on evidence-based and results-driven care. Our doctors perform a detailed consultation and customise the PicoSure Laser Treatments for every patient. This bespoke approach ensures optimal results for skin concerns like enlarged pores, pigmentation, and acne scars, helping clients achieve the best skin of their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Cause Scarring?

When performed correctly with proper techniques using PicoSure, scarring is generally minimal. However, risks may increase due to personal history with keloids or hypertrophic scars, improper aftercare, or infections post-treatment.

PicoSure effectively targets various tattoo colours; black and blue inks respond well, while lighter colours like white and pink are more challenging to treat.

Common side effects include temporary redness and swelling post-treatment. Rarely, blisters may occur but should not be scratched or picked at during healing to avoid severe complications like infections or scarring.

Some discomfort is expected during the procedure; however, numbing cream and cooling air are utilised to alleviate pain.
